My weekend gear is so boring

Erica’s top tips

1. Stick to separates if you feel uncomfortable about casual wear. It doesn’t mean sticking to a tracksuit - choose a textured jacket and wear with smart jeans.

2. Go for denim in a dark colour and pay a little bit more for it – it will last longer and help you look more polished.

3. Choose plain pieces but make a statement with your jewellery. You can ring the changes and it will help create a more unique look.

4. Experiment with colour. If you stick to sludgy shades like Brenda does, introduce tones that will work with them and match them to your existing wardrobe.

LEGAL secretary Brenda Homer is great at sorting out her styling brief during the week.

The 51-year-old from Romford in Essex says she doesn’t have a problem dressing for work – it’s just on dress-down days and weekends that she struggles.

Brenda says: “My daughter Lauren, 20, is desperate for me to have a makeover as she thinks I dress so boringly most of the time.

“I tend to stick to plain stuff as it is so much easier for me.

“I don’t have a problem with my work wear but I do want to experiment with colour a bit.

“My wardrobe is particularly boring at the weekend.

“Lauren says on the rare occasion I do make an effort, I look great but I know I don’t do it often enough.

“I feel sorry for my partner Keith – he must despair!”

STREET CHIC SOS: Brenda is a classic style sufferer: She is comfortable in her work wear but doesn’t really know where to start at the weekend.

Brenda is happy in tailored pieces and there really isn’t any need to stop at the weekends, particularly with so many great pieces around for spring.

She should try introducing wide-leg jeans to her wardrobe and mixing them with a tailored jacket.

This pair from Whistles at John Lewis are perfect – and they are really flattering.

Tailoring is a big trend this season, with great little jackets in cheap stores such as Matalan and Primark.

Rather than stick to her usual bland colours, Brenda should try denims, pastels or even leather.

Leather blazers are everywhere and she will definitely find a style to suit.

We love styles with one or two buttons that nip you in at the waist.

The shape is modern, without making her appear too young.

She will feel comfortable as the jacket is a similar style to those she wears for work but the look will be completely different and much cooler.

We also wanted to show Brenda how she can do dresses for smart events – this gorgeous one from M&S is just the job.

Worn with statement jewellery, glossy lipstick and a pair of brilliant heels, Brenda can show them all just how well she scrubs up!
