HEARTACHE ... Phillips Idowu

HEARTACHE ... Phillips Idowu

Idowu misses out on dream

BRITAIN'S golden boy Phillips Idowu was forced to settle for silver in the triple jump today.

The favourite saw the title snatched from his grasp by an agonising five centimetres in Beijing.

Idowu, 29, produced his best jump of the year to lead with 17.62 metres after the third round.

But he saw Portugal’s Nelson Evora then leap 17.67m in the next round.

Matching his personal best of 17.68m would have given Idowu gold but the Londoner was unable to improve in the final two rounds and had to settle for silver.

Leevan Sands of the Bahamas claimed bronze with 17.59m, while Britain’s Larry Achike was seventh.
