But Team GB cycling boss Dave Brailsford reckons there is far more to come and insisted: “We can’t wait to get the rest of the team in action!”
Superboss Brailsford will unleash Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton, Mark Cavendish, Rebecca Romero and BMX wondergirl Shanaze Reade in an attempt at grabbing a record-breaking EIGHT golden gongs.
The man who saw his team win nine of the 18 titles at the world track championships in Manchester, said: “What a brilliant start by Nicole.
“And what a massive boost for the rest of the team.
“I was on the phone back to them at the Olympic Village as Nicole crossed the line and I thought the place had erupted!
“Everyone is on an incredible high.”

BEAMING ... winner Cooke
He added: “Some people are probably expecting me to downplay it a bit so as not to create too many expectations.
“On the contrary. We wanted to get off to a good start.
“And Nicole has made sure we have.
“I believe we have the team to build on her success — and the form.”
Neither torrential rain nor a safety-first tactic at the last bend that saw Cooke, 25, slip 20 metres adrift of the leading pack could stop the Welsh girl fighting back to hit the front and hold her lead in a nailbiting 150m dash to the finishing line.
Cooke said: “I’d trained all year for this and I wasn’t going to let it slip away at the end.
“No, the conditions weren’t the best. But I’ve raced in the snow before so I wasn’t going to let a little bit of rain put me off!”
Cooke was timed at 3hrs, 32min, 24secs for the 126km event, along with both Sweden’s second-placed Emma Johannson and Italy’s Tatiana Guderzo — but won the gold by a wheel and a half.
Cooke let out a scream of delight as she won and said: “I couldn’t help it. That’s the way I am, passionate and emotional.”
Cooke had huge support from team-mates Emma Pooley and Sharon Laws.
And the golden girl insisted: “I couldn’t have done it without them. This gold medal belongs to them as much as me.”
